Have Fun Exercising – Square Dance

Are you bored with your exercise routine? Try square dancing.

“I never thought exercising could be so much fun,” says Terri Lowder, a retired teacher who along with her husband Dennis has been a member of the Square Benders dance club for three years. “Square dancing is not just an aerobic activity, but keeps us mentally alert when reacting to calls. It also gives us an opportunity to socialize and make new friends.

Square dancers like to use the word “modern” when referring to their form of dance. Even though it is the official folk dance of the United States, square dancing has evolved by using new calls and music from Golden Oldies to current hits. And traditional square dance clothing is now an option as many are choosing to wear current fashion.

In addition to exercising both body and mind and socializing, square dancers cite other benefits, such as the low cost for dances (averaging five dollars). Square dancing is also “universal,” occurring in all parts of the world. Dances are always called in English and follow the same patterns. Many dancers seek out clubs on their vacations for the opportunity to dance and meet people from another area or country.

All ages are welcome at square dances. Some dancers continue dancing well into their 80’s and even 90’s. They credit square dancing with helping them to keep fit and active.

“Square dancing is never boring,” Terri Lowder comments. ‘My husband and I took lessons to learn the basic steps and then decided to learn more at the plus level. We hope to also learn round dancing, which is similar to ballroom dancing, but done simultaneously in a circle while responding to a “cuer.”

The Square Dance Association of Wisconsin, SDAW, holds an annual convention in a different region of the state. A national convention is also held annually. The Southeast Area of Wisconsin, SEA, includes nine clubs dancing at different times during a month. For more information call 262-820-9161.

Club dances are held every 1st, 3rd, & 5th Fridays from 7:30-10:00 PM
Westport Town Hall is located at 5399 Mary Lake Dr. which is off County Hwy M north of Madison.
The Cost is $4.00 per person and $2.00 for youth under 18. The club dances Mainstream with one Plus tip at the end.
Rounds are cued only if the caller can cue.
Members provide a potluck lunch after the dance.
Square dance attire is optional during hot summer months.
Square dance lessons begin every September.

A Tip on Screen Shots: In order to take a screen shot, or make a picture file of what appears on your screen.

1. Hold the CTRL key while you then hit the PrtScn button
It's saved into the copy buffer.

2. Just open a Paint Program (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint) and click Edit -> Paste. Then, save the file anywhere you want.

Or open Word, Powerpoint, whatever and Edit -> Paste it.
This can be VERY helpful when you have a situation, an alert message or something that you want someone else to see. Take a shot, save it, email it. Life is already better.

Very useful for taking pictures of your flyer
to send to the editor of this blog, too.

This blog is to help Square Dance Clubs in Wisconsin promote their activities. More often, both new and returning dancers are using the net to find square dance clubs.

Does a club need a website? Probably not. Can a club still benefit by having their activities posted on the internet? You bet. You can set up your own blog. And when you do you need to tell people. You need to tell people beyond your own club. That is exactly the point for flyers.

How-To:
When you become an author to this blog you will be given an email address. You can then send an email with text and a picture attached and it will be posted automatically.

I will then get an email that you emailed a post. I will check to see who it's from and then assign it the correct label. The labels - called Member Clubs - are useful for navigation. Other than that, I, the owner of the blog, do not have to intervene.

You will put pertinent information in the subject line - as in 'Fox Valley Cancels Friday Dance.'
Then the body of the email or the flyer (in picture format) attached will tell of the details.
A picture, or screen shot, of a flyer is not necessary. The Who What When Where and Why can be put in plain and simple text. Clip art is nice. Words are necessary.

When you click on one of the pictures on the blog you will get a bigger picture that may serve as an acceptable flyer when printed if you want to share flyers with others.

A Tip on Screen Shots: In order to take a screen shot, or make a picture file of what appears on your screen ... (in XP, at least), Hit 2 buttons: CTRL-PrtScn. It's saved into the copy buffer. Just open the Paint Program (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint) and click Edit -> Paste. Save the file anywhere you want.

Or open Word, Powerpoint, whatever and Paste it.
This can be VERY helpful when you have a situation, an alert message or something that you want someone else to see. Take a shot and save it.

Very useful for taking pictures of your flyer to send to the editor of this blog, too.
